What Is the eWPTX Certification?

eWPTX, the Web Application Penetration Tester eXtreme, is INE Security’s advanced web app pentesting certification. It sits above eWPT and is aimed at testers who already know the basics and want to prove they can handle modern apps: APIs, tricky authentication, filter evasion and WAF bypass.

It’s fully practical. No multiple choice. You attack a realistic environment and your results are graded.

What Does the eWPTX Exam Cover?

DomainWeight
API Penetration Testing25%
Web Application Reconnaissance15%
Authentication Attacks15%
Injection Vulnerabilities15%
Web App Pentesting Methodology10%
Server-Side Attacks10%
Filter Evasion & WAF Bypass10%

API testing is a quarter of the exam on its own. If you’ve mostly tested classic server-rendered sites, that’s the gap to close first: REST and GraphQL, broken object-level authorization, mass assignment, token handling.

Who Is eWPTX For?

Pentesters with eWPT, OSCP-level or equivalent experience, bug bounty hunters moving into professional work, and AppSec engineers who want an offensive credential. Beginners will struggle. This is the “extreme” one for a reason.

How to Prepare for eWPTX

  1. Lock in the basics. SQLi, XSS, SSRF, auth flaws. If any of these feel slow, revisit eWPT-level material.
  2. Spend real time on APIs. Build or deploy a deliberately vulnerable API and break it repeatedly.
  3. Practice evasion. Encodings, payload mutation, case tricks and WAF behaviour. Know why a bypass works.
  4. Follow a methodology. Recon → mapping → auth → injection → server-side. Skipping recon costs points.
  5. Use concept questions to find weak areas before you burn a voucher.

Common Mistakes on eWPTX

  • Rushing past recon and missing an endpoint or API version that holds the easiest points
  • Treating the WAF as a wall instead of studying what it actually blocks
  • Testing authentication only at the login form and ignoring tokens, password reset and session handling
  • Not keeping notes, then losing track of which payloads worked where

Is eWPTX Worth It for Your Career?

For web and API-focused roles, yes. Job ads for application security testers and senior pentesters increasingly ask for proven API skills, and eWPTX is one of the few certifications that weights APIs this heavily. It also pairs well with a white-box credential later if you want to move into secure code review.

Voucher Timing and Retakes

INE’s current voucher terms give you 180 days from the date the voucher lands in your account to sit the exam. If you fail the first attempt, the free retake must be used within 14 days of that attempt, so leave yourself buffer inside the 180 days. Treat the first attempt seriously. Two weeks isn’t long to close gaps before the retake.

Where eWPTX Fits

eWPTX is INE’s top web application testing credential. It assumes you’re already comfortable with everything in eWPT, and it pushes into advanced exploitation: chaining bugs, evading filters and defences, and attacking modern application features. Many testers take OffSec’s OSWE afterwards to add white-box code review. Practise on intentionally vulnerable apps with WAF-style filtering turned on, and keep notes on bypass techniques you can reuse.

Frequently Asked Questions About eWPTX

Is eWPTX harder than eWPT?

Yes. eWPT covers core web pentesting; eWPTX adds heavy API testing, advanced authentication attacks and WAF bypass.

Is the eWPTX exam multiple choice?

No. It’s fully hands-on and auto-graded.

How long is eWPTX valid?

Three years from the date it’s awarded.

What if I fail?

You get one free retake, which must be completed within 14 days and before your voucher’s 180-day expiry.

Which domain carries the most weight?

API Penetration Testing, at 25%.

Should I take OSWE or eWPTX?

They suit different goals. OSWE is white-box code review and exploit writing; eWPTX is black-box web and API testing. See our OSWE practice exam if you’re weighing both.

How much experience do I need before eWPTX?

Most successful candidates have at least a year of hands-on web testing or a solid eWPT-level foundation. Comfort with Burp Suite, scripting small payloads and reading HTTP traffic quickly makes a big difference.
