What Is the OffSec OSWE Certification?

OSWE, the OffSec Web Expert, is the certification for the WEB-300 Advanced Web Attacks and Exploitation course. It’s a white-box exam: you get access to application source code, find chained vulnerabilities by reading it, and write a working exploit script. No scanners doing the work for you.

That makes OSWE different from most web certs. It’s as much about secure code review and debugging as it is about hacking.

OSWE Exam at a Glance

DetailOSWE
CourseWEB-300: Advanced Web Attacks and Exploitation
Exam time47 hours 45 minutes
Report deadline24 hours after the exam ends
Passing score85 out of 100 points
DeliverableA single working proof-of-concept script per target that chains vulnerabilities with no user interaction
ProctoringYes, all OSWE exams are proctored

What Isn’t Allowed in the OSWE Exam?

This catches people out, so read it carefully:

  • No automatic exploitation tools such as SQLmap
  • No mass vulnerability scanners such as Nessus or OpenVAS
  • No source code analyzers
  • No AI chatbots or LLMs
  • No downloading or remotely mounting application code from the exam environment

Tools like Burp Suite (free), Nmap, Nikto and payload generators such as ysoserial are allowed. Always check OffSec’s current exam guide before you sit.

What Skills Does OSWE Test?

  • Reading source code in several languages to find auth bypasses and injection points
  • Chaining bugs: for example, an authentication bypass into a deserialization or SQL injection that leads to code execution
  • Debugging live applications to confirm what the code actually does
  • Writing reliable exploit scripts, usually in Python
  • Documenting findings in a clear, reproducible report

Who Should Take OSWE?

Experienced pentesters (OSCP-level or beyond), AppSec engineers, secure code reviewers and developers who want to understand attacks from the inside. If you already hold OSCP (our OSCP practice exam helps there), OSWE is a natural next step for web specialists.

How to Prepare for OSWE

  1. Get comfortable reading unfamiliar code fast. Grep, trace user input, follow it to dangerous functions.
  2. Script everything. Your final exploit must run end to end with no clicks. Practice building these during the labs.
  3. Do every WEB-300 lab app, including the extra miles. Exam targets feel similar in style.
  4. Set up debugging properly. Remote debuggers save hours.
  5. Plan your 48 hours. Sleep, breaks and report time. Fatigue causes more fails than lack of skill.

Common OSWE Mistakes

  • Finding the bug but running out of time to make the PoC fully automated
  • Using a forbidden tool out of habit
  • Not saving screenshots and code snippets during the exam for the report
  • Going too deep on one target before surveying both

The Report Matters as Much as the Exploits

OffSec gives you 47 hours and 45 minutes in a private VPN lab, then a further 24 hours to submit your documentation using its OSWE report template (Word or LibreOffice). All OSWE exams are proctored by webcam and screen sharing, and OffSec expects you to take breaks to rest, eat and sleep during the window. Plan those breaks before you start.

A technically strong attempt can still fail on weak documentation, so write as you go. Capture each step of your authentication bypass and code execution chain, with screenshots and the exact commands. Then make sure your exploit script runs cleanly from start to finish. Read the template before exam day, not after.

What’s in the CertsArea OSWE Practice Pack?

  • 300 practice questions with explanations on white-box methodology, vulnerability classes, chaining logic and exam rules
  • PDF plus practice test software for Windows, Mac and mobile
  • Free updates for 180 days and instant download

OSWE is a hands-on exam, so treat our questions as a way to test your understanding and spot gaps. Do them alongside WEB-300 labs, not instead of them.

Frequently Asked Questions About OSWE

How long is the OSWE exam?

47 hours and 45 minutes, plus 24 hours to submit your report.

What score do I need to pass OSWE?

85 points out of 100.

Can I use SQLmap in OSWE?

No. Automatic exploitation tools are prohibited.

Is OSWE harder than OSCP?

It’s different. OSCP is broad network pentesting; OSWE is deep web exploitation through code review and exploit writing. Many find OSWE harder if they’re not used to reading code.

Which programming languages should I know?

You should be able to read common web languages and write Python for your exploit scripts.

Is OSWE useful for AppSec roles?

Yes. It’s well regarded for application security and secure code review positions.
