What Is the Manager Training Readiness Assessment (MTRA)?

The Manager Training Readiness Assessment (MTRA) is used in Dairy Queen restaurant operations to check whether a team member or shift leader is ready to move into manager training. It looks at the knowledge a new manager needs from day one: food safety, running a shift, guest service, people leadership and the basic numbers of a restaurant.

CertsArea is an independent study resource and isn’t affiliated with International Dairy Queen. The exact content, format and pass mark of the MTRA can vary by franchise group and over time, so always confirm details with your trainer or franchise operator.

What Topics Does the MTRA Typically Cover?

AreaWhat you should know
Food safetyTime and temperature control, cross-contamination, handwashing, allergens, cleaning and sanitising
Shift managementOpening and closing procedures, positioning, breaks, handling rushes
Guest experienceService standards, speed of service, handling complaints and recovery
People leadershipCoaching, giving feedback, training new team members, scheduling basics
Product standardsBuild accuracy, portioning, equipment care and quality checks
Restaurant numbersSales, labour percentage, food cost, waste and cash handling

Who Takes the MTRA?

Shift leaders, assistant managers and high-performing crew members who’ve been put forward for manager training. Some groups also use it with external hires before they start a manager program.

How to Prepare for the MTRA

  1. Get food safety solid. If you’ve got a food protection manager certificate, review it. If not, study safe holding temperatures, cooling rules and allergen handling.
  2. Shadow your manager. Ask to see how they open, close, count cash and run labour reports.
  3. Learn the numbers. Know how labour percentage and food cost are worked out and what affects them.
  4. Practise people scenarios. How would you coach someone who’s late, or calm an upset guest?
  5. Use timed practice questions so the real assessment feels familiar.

A One-Week MTRA Study Plan

Days 1–2: Food safety. Temperatures, holding times, allergens and cleaning schedules.

Days 3–4: Operations. Opening and closing checklists, positioning charts, cash handling and equipment care.

Day 5: People and guests. Coaching conversations, complaint handling and service recovery.

Days 6–7: Numbers and review. Labour and food cost basics, then a full timed practice test and a review of every miss.

Common MTRA Mistakes

  • Knowing the crew side of the job well but not the manager’s responsibilities
  • Guessing on food safety temperatures and times
  • Answering people questions with “tell the manager”, when you’re being assessed as the manager

Preparing When Official Details Are Limited

There’s no public exam blueprint for the MTRA, so the most reliable source is your own employer or franchise trainer. Ask them directly which manual, modules or online lessons the assessment draws from, how it’s delivered, and what score they expect. Then study from those materials first. Use general practice questions only to check your understanding, not as a substitute for the company’s own training.

Readiness assessments for restaurant managers usually check whether you can run a shift safely and consistently. That means knowing food safety and temperature rules, opening and closing routines, cash handling, scheduling and leading a crew. If your role also requires a food safety manager certificate under local law, that’s a separate, accredited exam, and many managers prepare for both at the same time.
