What Is the eCIR Certification?

eCIR, the Certified Incident Responder credential from INE Security, tests whether you can handle a breach the way a real IR team would. You’re dropped into a lab that simulates a compromised corporate network, and you answer scenario questions based on what you actually find, much like the findings in a professional incident report.

It’s practical from start to finish. Knowing definitions won’t carry you; you need to investigate.

What Does eCIR Cover?

DomainWeight
Endpoint & Network Analysis35%
Threat Detection & SIEM Operations20%
Digital Forensics & Evidence-Based Analysis20%
Reporting & Communication15%
Threat Intelligence & Attribution10%

Endpoint and network analysis is over a third of the score. If you only practise one thing hard, make it reading endpoint artefacts and packet captures quickly and accurately.

Who Should Take eCIR?

SOC analysts moving into incident response, IR team members who want a hands-on credential, and DFIR specialists. It also suits blue teamers who already hold something like BTL1 and want the next step.

How to Prepare for eCIR

  1. Get fluent with SIEM searching. Pivot from one alert to the related host, user and network events without losing the thread.
  2. Practise endpoint triage. Processes, persistence, scheduled tasks, event logs and memory artefacts.
  3. Read PCAPs. Spot C2 beaconing, lateral movement and exfiltration.
  4. Build a timeline as you go. Many scenario questions depend on the order of events.
  5. Write short, clear findings. Reporting is 15% of the exam.

A Simple 4-Week eCIR Study Plan

Week 1: SIEM fundamentals. Write searches for failed logons, new services, suspicious PowerShell and outbound connections to rare destinations.

Week 2: Endpoint and network analysis. Work through Windows event logs, Sysmon, prefetch and a handful of PCAPs from known attacks.

Week 3: Forensics and threat intel. Practise memory and disk triage, then map what you find to MITRE ATT&CK and known threat groups.

Week 4: Full scenario practice. Investigate a lab breach start to finish, build the timeline and write a one-page report. Then review every question you got wrong in your practice tests.

Is eCIR Worth It?

For blue teamers, it’s one of the more credible practical IR certifications at a reasonable price. Hiring managers like it because the exam mirrors day-to-day IR work: alerts, evidence, timelines and a clear write-up. It also makes a good stepping stone toward more advanced DFIR credentials.

Common eCIR Mistakes

  • Answering from memory instead of checking the evidence in the lab
  • Skipping the timeline and mixing up the attack sequence
  • Ignoring threat intel context when it’s needed for attribution questions

What’s in the CertsArea eCIR Practice Pack?

  • 300 practice questions with explanations across all five domains
  • PDF plus practice test software for Windows, Mac and mobile
  • Free updates for 180 days and instant download

Use the questions to check your understanding of IR concepts, then put in plenty of lab hours. Pair this with our eCTHP practice exam if threat hunting is next on your list.

Frequently Asked Questions About eCIR

Is eCIR multiple choice?

The questions are scenario-based, but you can only answer them by investigating the lab environment.

Which eCIR domain carries the most weight?

Endpoint & Network Analysis at 35%.

How long is eCIR valid?

Three years from the date it’s awarded.

What happens if I fail?

You get one free retake, which must be completed within 14 days and before your voucher expires.

Is eCIR good for a SOC career?

Yes. It’s a practical way to show you can move beyond alert triage into real incident handling.

Do I need eCTHP before eCIR?

No. They’re separate tracks. eCIR focuses on responding to an incident; eCTHP focuses on proactively hunting for one.
