What Is the Blue Team Level 2 (BTL2) Certification?

BTL2 is the advanced, hands-on defensive security certification from Security Blue Team (now delivered through CENTRI). Where BTL1 proves you can work a SOC queue, BTL2 proves you can run an investigation end to end: pull apart malware, hunt for attackers who’ve already slipped past your alerts, and write it all up in a report a client or manager could act on.

It isn’t a multiple-choice test. You get a lab environment that looks a lot like a real incident, a set of tools from the course, and a clock. That’s why employers who hire for DFIR and threat-hunting roles tend to take it seriously.

How Is the BTL2 Exam Structured?

Exam detailWhat to expect
FormatPractical, lab-based investigation plus a written report
Time limitUp to 72 hours for the practical work and report
Passing score70% or higher
MarkingReports are hand-marked by the exam team
BonusA gold challenge coin for 90%+ on the first attempt (silver for a pass)
PrerequisitesNone formally; BTL1 and 2+ years in security are recommended

Seventy-two hours sounds like a lot. It isn’t. Most candidates say the report eats far more time than they planned, so practice writing findings as you go, not at the end.

What Domains Does BTL2 Cover?

  • Malware Analysis: static and dynamic analysis, reading suspicious scripts and binaries, pulling IOCs you can actually hunt with.
  • Threat Hunting: building hypotheses, searching endpoint and network data for activity that never triggered an alert.
  • Advanced SIEM: writing and tuning queries, correlating events across sources, spotting the noise versus the signal.
  • Vulnerability Management: finding weaknesses, ranking them by real risk and recommending fixes.

The official guidance is that nothing appears on the exam that isn’t taught in the course. So the course material is your syllabus. Don’t skip modules you think you already know.

Who Should Take BTL2?

It’s aimed at mid-to-senior analysts: incident responders, SOC tier 2/3 staff, threat hunters, malware analysts and security consultants. If you’ve passed BTL1 and you’ve spent a couple of years looking at real alerts, you’re the target candidate. Newer analysts can attempt it, but expect a heavy study load.

How Should You Prepare for BTL2?

  1. Finish BTL1-level fundamentals first. If phishing analysis, log basics and SIEM searching still feel shaky, start with our BTL1 practice exam.
  2. Work the course labs twice. The first pass teaches the tool. The second pass teaches speed.
  3. Keep a running investigation log. Timestamp, finding, evidence, next step. That log becomes your report.
  4. Drill concept questions. Knowing why a technique works helps when the lab doesn’t match the course exactly.
  5. Do one full timed mock. Block a weekend, run a scenario, write the report. You’ll find your weak spots fast.

How Does the CertsArea BTL2 Practice Pack Help?

Our BTL2 pack isn’t a copy of the exam. It can’t be, because the exam is a live lab. What it does is test the knowledge behind every step of an investigation, so you’re not stuck looking things up while the clock runs.

  • 300 practice questions with explanations covering malware analysis, threat hunting, SIEM and vulnerability management
  • PDF for reading on any device, plus practice test software for Windows, Mac and mobile
  • Free updates for 180 days and instant download after payment

Use it alongside the official course and labs, not instead of them.

Common Mistakes BTL2 Candidates Make

  • Leaving the report until the last 12 hours
  • Chasing one rabbit hole for a whole day instead of mapping the full attack first
  • Listing IOCs without explaining how they connect
  • Skipping vulnerability management because it feels “easy”

Frequently Asked Questions About BTL2

Is BTL2 harder than BTL1?

Yes, by a good margin. BTL1 checks core SOC skills. BTL2 expects you to lead an investigation and explain it clearly in writing.

Do I need BTL1 before BTL2?

It’s not mandatory, but it’s strongly advised. Most people who skip it end up revisiting BTL1 topics anyway.

How long is the BTL2 exam?

You get up to 72 hours to complete the practical and submit your report.

What score do I need to pass BTL2?

70% or higher. Hit 90% or more on your first attempt and you earn the gold challenge coin.

Is BTL2 good for a DFIR or threat hunting career?

It’s one of the more practical credentials for those roles because it shows you can actually run an investigation, not just recall definitions.

Can practice questions alone get me through BTL2?

No. The exam is hands-on. Practice questions help you lock in concepts and spot gaps; the labs build the muscle memory you’ll need.
