What Is the Massachusetts M-1 Unrestricted Master Sheet Metal Exam?

The M-1 is Massachusetts’ unrestricted Master Sheet Metal Worker license, issued by the state Board of Examiners of Sheet Metal Workers. With it you can run a sheet metal business with no size limit on projects. The exam behind it is mostly a business and law test: estimating, finances, contracts, taxes, safety and the Massachusetts sheet metal regulations.

How to Prepare

  1. Tab your references. Open book only helps if you can find answers fast.
  2. Practise the maths. Financial management and estimating are 15 questions together: markup vs margin, overhead, cash flow and ratios.
  3. Read 271 CMR once fully, then highlight licensing, permits and supervision rules.
  4. Learn the tax and labour basics in the NASCLA manual.
  5. Take timed practice tests. 50 questions in 120 minutes leaves about 2.4 minutes each.

Common Mistakes

  • Turning up with untabbed books
  • Confusing markup and margin
  • Assuming the exam is about sheet metal technique, when it’s mostly business law

Who Can Sit the M-1 Exam?

To apply for the M-1 unrestricted master exam in Massachusetts, you need a current Massachusetts J-1 unrestricted journeyperson licence. You also need to complete a 40-hour Master’s course from a Board-approved training program, or an equivalent 3-credit business course. You apply to the Board of Examiners of Sheet Metal Workers with a passport-style photo. Applications left incomplete for 180 days are treated as abandoned.

If you trained or worked outside Massachusetts, contact the Board before you apply. Out-of-state experience and non-approved training need separate approval. Holders of an unrestricted master licence from another jurisdiction can ask the Board to waive the Master’s course or the exam.

Booking and Exam Day

Once the Board approves your application, PSI contacts you to schedule the exam, and you pay the exam fee directly to PSI. Read PSI’s candidate bulletin before booking. It lists the ID you need, the test centres and the reference rules. If you pass, your licence is mailed to your address of record, and you can keep your journeyperson licence too.

What M-1 Lets You Do

An M-1 holder can do any sheet metal work in Massachusetts and run a business as an individual, firm or corporation. You must keep a regular place of business with your licence displayed. M-2 restricted masters are limited by building size, so M-1 is the licence for commercial and larger projects.
