What Is the CIAM Certification?
CIAM, the Certified Identity and Access Manager, is a credential from the Identity Management Institute (IMI). It’s built around how identity and access programs are run in real organisations: governance, provisioning, access reviews, reconciliation and the tools that hold it all together. Rather than testing one vendor’s product, it tests whether you understand the risks in each part of the IAM lifecycle.
What Does CIAM Cover?
The CIAM body of knowledge is organised into ten Critical Risk Domains (CRDs):
| Domain | Focus |
|---|---|
| CRD1: Strategy and Governance | IAM policy, ownership and alignment with business goals |
| CRD2: Program Management | Running IAM as a program, metrics and resourcing |
| CRD3: Lifecycle and Transformation | Joiner-mover-leaver processes and IAM modernisation |
| CRD4: Access Request and Approval | Request workflows and approver accountability |
| CRD5: Provisioning and De-Provisioning | Granting and removing access on time |
| CRD6: Enforcement | Authentication, authorisation and least privilege |
| CRD7: Auditing and Reporting | Evidence, logging and compliance reporting |
| CRD8: Access Review and Certification | Periodic reviews and recertification campaigns |
| CRD9: Account Reconciliation | Finding orphaned, shared and unauthorised accounts |
| CRD10: Tools | IAM, IGA and PAM technology selection and use |
Check IMI’s current candidate guide for exam length, question count and eligibility, as these can change.
Who Should Take CIAM?
IAM analysts and managers, identity governance specialists, security leaders responsible for access control, IT auditors who test access controls, and consultants who design IAM programs.
How to Prepare for CIAM
- Study domain by domain. Each CRD has its own risks and controls. Make a one-page summary for each.
- Think like an auditor. Many questions ask what can go wrong and which control prevents it.
- Connect the lifecycle. Request → approval → provisioning → enforcement → review → de-provisioning. Know where each control sits.
- Use real examples. Map the domains to your organisation’s processes; it makes recall far easier.
- Practise timed questions to get used to scenario-style wording.
A 4-Week CIAM Study Plan
Week 1: CRD1–CRD3. Governance, program management and lifecycle. Focus on who owns what and why.
Week 2: CRD4–CRD6. Request, approval, provisioning and enforcement. Learn the controls at each hand-off.
Week 3: CRD7–CRD10. Auditing, access reviews, reconciliation and tools.
Week 4: Mixed practice questions, then revisit your two weakest domains.
Is CIAM Worth It?
Identity is now the front line of security, and most breaches involve misused or excessive access. CIAM gives IAM professionals a vendor-neutral framework they can apply to any toolset, which is valuable when moving between organisations or advising clients on IAM programs.
Common CIAM Mistakes
- Studying IAM tools in depth but skipping governance and program management
- Confusing access review (CRD8) with account reconciliation (CRD9)
- Treating de-provisioning as an afterthought, when it’s one of the biggest real-world risks
Membership, Experience and Study
CIAM is run by the Identity Management Institute (IMI). To earn it, you need IMI membership, roughly four years of combined experience and post-high-school education, and a passing exam score. IMI organises the programme around its Critical Risk Domains, and its study guide covers identity governance, programme management, identity lifecycle and transformation, authentication, access management processes, and enforcement. IMI also sells an on-demand CIAM video course for exam preparation.
Watch the acronym. CIAM is also used for customer identity and access management, and many online “CIAM” resources are about that topic rather than IMI’s certification. Make sure your practice material follows IMI’s domains, not a vendor’s customer IAM product.

Frequently Asked Questions About CIAM
Who issues the CIAM certification?
The Identity Management Institute (IMI).
How many domains are in CIAM?
Ten Critical Risk Domains, from Strategy and Governance through to Tools.
Is CIAM vendor-specific?
No. It’s vendor-neutral and focuses on IAM processes, risks and controls.
Is CIAM useful for auditors?
Yes. Its risk-and-control approach maps well to access control audits.
What’s the difference between access review and reconciliation?
Access review checks whether people should still have the access they’ve got. Reconciliation checks that accounts in target systems match what’s authorised in the identity system.
How long should I study for CIAM?
With IAM experience, a few weeks of focused study per domain set is typical. Newer professionals should allow more time.
