What Is the eJPT Certification?
eJPT, the Junior Penetration Tester certification from INE Security, is one of the most popular first steps into offensive security. It’s 100% hands-on: you attack a lab network, find and exploit weaknesses, and answer questions based on what you discover.
It’s built for beginners, but don’t confuse “entry-level” with “easy”. You need real fundamentals in networking, enumeration and exploitation.

| Web Application Penetration Testing | 15% |
Skills You’ll Need
- TCP/IP, subnetting and routing basics
- Host discovery and port scanning with Nmap
- Service enumeration (SMB, FTP, SSH, HTTP, MySQL)
- Exploitation with Metasploit and manual techniques
- Password attacks and credential reuse
- Pivoting into a second network segment
- Basic web testing: directory brute forcing, SQLi and XSS
How to Prepare for eJPT
- Get networking solid. Pivoting questions are much easier if routing makes sense.
- Enumerate everything. Most exam answers come from careful enumeration, not fancy exploits.
- Practise pivoting with Metasploit routes and port forwarding.
- Keep structured notes per host: IP, ports, services, creds, flags.
- Do beginner boxes on platforms like TryHackMe or Hack The Box.
A 4-Week eJPT Study Plan
Week 1: Networking and Nmap. Week 2: Service enumeration and Metasploit. Week 3: Web basics and password attacks. Week 4: Pivoting and two full mock labs.
Is eJPT Worth It?
For beginners, it’s one of the best-value practical certifications available. It proves you can actually run through a basic pentest, which helps you stand out for junior SOC, pentest and security analyst roles, and it builds the habits you’ll need for harder exams later.
Common eJPT Mistakes
- Skipping enumeration and jumping straight to exploits
- Not noting credentials that work on other hosts
- Forgetting the second network segment entirely
How the eJPT Voucher and Retake Work
INE sells the eJPT voucher on its own (listed at US$249) or bundled with a subscription that includes the Penetration Testing Student learning path. Once purchased, the exam appears in your my.ine.com account, and the voucher is valid for 180 days. Each voucher includes one free retake if you fail. Candidates report it must be used within 14 days of the failed attempt and before the voucher expires, so don’t buy too early.
What the 48 Hours Actually Look Like
The exam is a live, practical lab, not a proctored quiz. You get a 48-hour window, a browser-based attack environment and a set of target machines. You answer around 35 questions using what you find in the lab, and you need 70% to pass. It’s open book, so your notes and the internet are fair game. Save scan output and findings to your own machine as you go, because a lab reset can wipe the attack box. Most people need far less than 48 hours, so use the spare time to double-check answers.
Where eJPT Leads
eJPT is valid for three years. It’s a common first step before INE’s eCPPT and, later, OffSec’s OSCP. Pivoting and routing between subnets trip up more candidates than exploitation does, so practise those before you start the clock.
